Description
Hot and Cold Aisle Containment Solutions
Maximise Cooling Efficiency with Intelligent Airflow Management
As the demand for data processing and storage grows exponentially, so does the pressure on data centre infrastructure to perform efficiently, sustainably, and cost-effectively. Traditional cooling methods — such as reducing rack density or over-provisioning HVAC capacity — are no longer viable in today’s high-density environments.
To meet modern performance and sustainability goals, data centres are increasingly turning to hot and cold aisle containment — a proven strategy to optimise airflow, reduce energy consumption, and maintain thermal reliability.
At XIX, we engineer and deliver bespoke aisle containment systems that seamlessly align with your facility’s design — whether you’re constructing a new build, scaling an existing site, or undertaking a retrofit project.
Why Containment Is Essential
In uncontained environments, cool supply air and warm exhaust air often mix freely, undermining cooling effectiveness and driving up energy costs. Containment systems eliminate this inefficiency by physically separating hot and cold air streams — significantly improving thermal predictability, airflow control, and system-wide cooling performance.
Key advantages of containment include:
-
Reduced energy usage from more efficient CRAC/CRAH operation
-
Higher rack densities without risking thermal hotspots
-
Extended equipment lifespan due to stable environmental conditions
-
Lower carbon footprint aligned with sustainability targets
How Aisle Containment Works
Our solutions are available in hot aisle or cold aisle configurations, designed to integrate with your cooling infrastructure and IT layout. Both approaches create a controlled environment that ensures predictable airflow paths and consistent temperatures.
Cold Aisle Containment (CAC)
-
Cold supply air is contained between the rows of server cabinets, enclosed by end-of-aisle doors and a roof system.
-
Air is delivered from below (typically via raised floor plenums) and is directed solely to the intake of the equipment.
-
Heated exhaust air exits the rear of the racks and disperses into the ambient room, where the CRAC/CRAH system recirculates it.
✅ Best for: Facilities with raised floor cooling, and where cold air needs to be protected from ambient mixing.
Hot Aisle Containment (HAC)
-
Heated exhaust air is captured between cabinet rows using aisle doors and ceiling panels.
-
This hot air is then ducted to overhead plenums or return paths, completely separated from the cold room environment.
-
The system returns this air directly to the cooling unit (CRAC/CRAH) for reconditioning and recirculation.
✅ Best for: High-density environments or slab-floor designs where managing exhaust heat is critical.
Containment System Components
Our containment architecture is built using modular, scalable components tailored to your facility’s constraints and thermal strategy:
1. End-of-Aisle Doors and Roof Panels
-
Form a physical barrier at each aisle end to preserve temperature differentials.
-
Roof panels prevent bypass airflow and help channel cold or hot air where it’s needed most.
2. In-Rack Airflow Management
-
Precision airflow solutions such as blanking panels, brush grommets, and rack chimneys maintain rack-level efficiency, reduce hotspots, and focus cooling where it matters.
3. Return Air Ducting & Pathways
-
Designed to ensure complete separation of supply and return airflow paths.
-
Channels warm air back to the cooling system efficiently, minimising recirculation and energy waste.
4. Vertical Aisle Containment
-
Ideal for non-standard room layouts, constrained spaces, or retrofits.
-
Uses side panels and aisle doors to maintain airflow integrity without needing full ceiling or floor modifications.
-
Supports both hot and cold aisle configurations with maximum flexibility.
